Richard Hofmann’s Christ in the Garden (1988) is now open for bidding in CULTUREEDIT Art Auction 9, benefiting the Tom of Finland Foundation.
One of only five unique collages Hofmann created in 1988, this 19-inch circular work combines watercolor, ink, and mixed media on paper.
Christ on a pedestal with a sinister shadow, a ballerina, bodybuilders, a church spire and a crowned 7 alcohol logo rotate along a clockwork of serious and silly signifiers of muscular deliverance.
Consigned by Heinrich von Kesseler from the Richard Hofmann Art Estate.

Featured on this website are artworks from the estate of Richard Hofmann (1954–1994), New York 1980’s East Village painter, performance artist and AIDS activist. Artabolic is now releasing hundreds of original works — preserved over the past forty years — in a range of media including oils, watercolors, woodcuts, etchings, as well as vintage wall-length club posters from the legendary Danceteria and Roxy.
Hofmann’s work has been most recently featured in the exhibition catalogue for About Face: Stonewall, Revolt and New Queer Art by Jonathan David Katz (pp. 216–219), which examines the emergence of queer artistic expression in the post-Stonewall era.
A limited number of affordable, high-quality reproductions of a dozen popular paintings from the 2022 solo exhibition Love and Kisses from the East Village 1986 are also available for purchase while supplies last.
Inquiries regarding custom reproduction sizes are also welcome. Please feel free to contact us regarding availability or special requests.
